CBSE Introduces Mandatory 3rd Language Policy for Classes 9-10 Starting July 2026
The central board of Secondary education (CBSE ) has made it mandatory for students in class 9 nd 10 to study three languages, effectively from July 1 , 2026 . There will be no board examinations for 3rd language (designated as R3) at the class 10th level
In a circular issue on May 15, the CBSE stated that this step has been taken "To keep the focus on learning and to Alleviate any form of unnecessary pressure on students"
Rules for Choosing 3rd Language
Schools may select a third language from the CBSE approved list ;There is one condition :The three languages studied by the students atleast two languages must be Indian . Schools are required to update there Language chooses on the OASIS portal by June 30,2026
How will The Threed Language Be Assessed ?
CBSE has clarified that all R3 assessments will be conducted internally by the schools themselves. There will be no Centralized board Examinations for third language. Students performance in R3 will be reflected on the CBSE certificate, but it will be based entirely on school -level assessment
Text books are Not Ready Yet
However, there is a catch textbook dedicated to R3 at the secondary level are not the currently available . For the time begin, CBSE has asked schools to use class 6th level textbooks (2026-2027) edition for the language selected in Class 9. Schools may also utilised Local literature -Such as short stories, Poetry, and non-fiction as a suppliment to there textbooks
CBSE is currently developing textbooks for several indian languages, Take a look on some of the languages includes in the list :
- Assamese
- Marathi
- Tamil
- Bengali
- Telugu
What about the Teachers ?
CBSE has acknowledged that,at present there is a shortage of languages teachers in all schools. As a temporary solution the Board has permitted to do the following steps :
- Utilize existing teachers of other subjects who possess a working knowledge of the languages
- Share teaching resources with neighbour schools.
- Adopt virtual and Hybrid teaching methods.
- Appoint retired teachers to address this shortage
Exemptions for Special Cases
CBSE has provided flexibility on a case-by-case basis for certain groups. These includes :
- Childern with Special Needs (CWSN)
- Foreign students study in India
- Students enrolled in CBSE affiliated schools abroad.
